This year’s Met Gala theme was “PUNK” and chaos.
While the ladies had more style leeway to express this theme, we’re pretty glad that the A-List men kept it modern, dapper and clean cut.
With the theme we expected the punk 90’s throwback of plaid and the now on-trend tartan.
Our picks of best dressed men:
Classic, modern lapel shape, matt black and very fitted. Hallmarks of a great suit.

The annual British GQ Men of the Year Awards were held this week in London and we have got to say the gents were on point. Honestly going through all the red carpet looks was such a pleasure and there were so many dapper men in attendance. If only all red carpet events could be as stylish.
We rounded up our fav looks from the evening, let us know who impressed you.

CSquared Mediterranean Resort Summer Collection 2012 will be available at HOM Menswear, Stuttafords & Markham stores and South Africa’s ultimate online shopping and style destination for men, ThirtySixMan
The style set turned out in force on Monday night for the CFDA Awards in New York, and made sure to dress for the occasion. Whether they were nominees, honored guests, or just friends of those in the industry, the attendees dressed up in some of the best fashion available. If there’s any night to put on fashion’s finest, then this was it.
We put together some of our top menswear looks for evening:
Seth Meyers

The host for the evening arrived wearing a Band of Outsiders black suit, but during the awards he donned the black Comme Des Garçons lace dress Marc Jacobs wore to the Met Gala last month with the white boxers.

Matt Bomer
White Collar star Matt Bomer wore a shiny Calvin Klein jet-black suit with a black buttoned white dress shirt and a black bow tie.

Zac Posen
The designer bought a touch of elegance by once gain wearing velvet. You might remember he also rocked the Met Gala in a stylin’ maroon velvet jacket matched with a purple bow tie.

Marc Jacobs
One of the biggest fashion surprises of the night was an understated Marc Jacobs. The designer suited up for the fashion awards ceremony. His traditional black tux was styled with a Louis Vuitton clutch. Who would’ve thought that Marc would be the more reserved of the bunch.

While some stuck to the black tie dress code, this is a fashion event there were bound to be some risk takers.
Pharrell Williams
We were torn with this look. We appreciate he took a fashion risk and wore shorts, tuxedo ones but they are still shorts. Pharrell adds to the quirkiness of the outfit by having his shirt sleeves extend well past his jacket, an rather large bowtie and completes the look with a beanie - looks like he is hiding a blonde dye job. Pharrell made it work but this is definitely for the more daring.

Brad Goreski
The stylist/ reality star was most definitely not a wallflower wearing a Kate Spade ‘Florence Broadhust’ Japanese floral print suit. The beautiful black-and-white suit, custom-made by Martin Greenfield, was styled with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Cameron Silver
Cameron wore a custom Nicole Miller suit with a coordinated custom Rod Keenan hat. He accessorized with a Shamballa Jewels medallion necklace, a custom Lisa Kingsley bag and bi-colour Burberry shoes. We really like the print of the suit and it definitely brings a more casual look to the formal affair.

John Waters
John Waters who accepted awards on behalf of both Johnny Depp and Rei Kawakubo who is the designer at the head of Comme des Garçons, arrived at the star studded event looking daper in a Comme des Garçons paisley blazer and bright orange sneakers.

Every May Hollywood’s A-List heads to the south of France for The Cannes Film Festival to enjoy a couple weeks of movies and lavish parties and like most we’d much rather be there in person, but instead will admire the fashion finery from afar.

Picking our favorites from the red carpet was not easy. So many of the gents got it so right but three gents above for us were standout. While the black suit may be a staple at such events, you have to appreciate those that make the effort to look refined and polished. The fits above are all flawless and each of these men should thank their tailor on a job well done.

Alec Baldwin and Ewan Mcgregor opted not to go with all black and it definitely paid off. Alec looked dashing in his navy blue tuxedo, complete with bow-tie. Ewan Mcgregor went for a more Cannes-chic look for his photocall. He wore a navy blue light jacket and pant, a white striped shirt and a dark grey silk star-printed tie from the Marni Spring 2012 collection. Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs also cleaned up quite nice, the rapper brought along a 50 person entourage with him to Cannes so we’re going to assume his stylist was along for the trip.

Young Hollywood brought their A-game to Cannes. Ed Westwick looks great in his tailored tux and Douglas Booth has a more casual styled look at the Romeo & Juliet event. We like Shia’s mix of grey and blue but the jacket could be fitted a little better.

We appreciate those that like to think of the box and go against fashion norms. While it worked for some - Tong Dawei we are looking at you and your checked shirt matched with burgandy tie, it didn’t for others - Bill Murray breaking several fashion rules all in one go. We would have liked to see Bill Murray pick one statement piece from his outfit rather than all three at once as Cameron Silver did with the black and white print pants which he matched with a black jacket and bowtie.

Sometimes bad fashion happens to good people. Chris O’Dowd was obviously going for a casual look but for us he got it very wrong. A different shirt would have worked so much better, perhaps one that compliments his shoes. We actually like Ezra Miller’s look but the badly worn cumberband ruined what could have been a stylin’ look. As for Pete Doherty where to begin…the musician looks like he just rolled out of bed. Looking good is not only about the clothes you wear but also about grooming.
This final look comes from Lapo Elkann who is the heir to the Fiat Empire. We have to give the man props for his bold style choices. The double breasted suit and loafers are clearly working for him. We especially like the white suit which looks very stylish and modern.

It has only been a few weeks since we crowned Mvelo Ncube the Csquared #TOPSWAG Style Icon Winner 2012 and it was at the glamorous MTN SAMAs he made he red/yellow carpet debut. Dressed head to toe in Csquared, our stylish winner walked the yellow carpet with the celebs and enjoyed VIP access to the main event and after party.
We asked Mvelo to tell us in his own words about his much anticipated debut:
Attending my first event on behalf of Csquared was a fun experience. More so when its the SAMA’s and they’re held at Sun City.
Anyone familiar with the resort knows that fun and great memories are just guaranteed alongside the monkeys you’ll find on your patio now and again.
The SAMA’s were amazing with everyone dressed to the 9’s, 10’s, 11’s and 12’s. My best dressed for the night were Pearl Thusi, Minnie Dlamini, Zizo Beda and Khuli Roberts putting the quirky into fashion with a dress made out of cellphone memory cards.
I spotted music sensation Theo Kgosinkwe, looking good in his Csquared suit. It was like tinsel had made a 24 hour stop at the Super Bowl, the fashion was just that great.
The morning after the night before all that could cure the headache which served as a reminder from a great night of literally dancing with the stars was the famous ‘Sun City breakfast’ and litres of coffee and a few more hours by the poolside with friends and well a long island or three.
With luggage packed, memories collected and check out keys in hand, all roads lead back home to JHB having experienced my first SAMA’s dressed by Csquared, it couldn’t have been any better.

The Met Gala also known as the fashion Oscars took place in New York City on Monday night. This year fashions finest gathered to celebrate Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli who together comprise the Costume Institute’s new exhibition the Impossible Conversations.
One thing you can count on when it comes to Met fashion is that is always outrageous. Csquared had a great time on Tuesday discussing this years most controversial look - Marc Jacobs in a Commes des Garcon lace tunic and white boxers on Facebook and Twitter.
But we are not here to discuss the outrageous, we want to share our top looks from the men.
Hands down the best look of the night for us was Zac Posen in this maroon suit and purple bow tie. The velvet jacket is pure elegance. Tailored to perfection, the color also stands out in the sea of black tuxes which a lot of the celebrities opt for at such an event.

Tom Ford…there is very little wrong this man can do in terms of style and it doesn’t hurt to have the gorgeous Chanel Iman on your arm either. The double-breasted jacket with wide winged silk lapels fits Tom well and the flower on the lapel adds a touch of panache to his outfit.

While we don’t think the sunglasses were necessary the suit itself is on point. This is how black tie should look. As one of the performers for the evening Bruno Mars was expected to look his best. And check out the crocodile shoes!! On a side note Bruno should stick to his coiffed hair which also would have been a better hairstyle for this event.

As expected with such a formal gathering there was a lot of black suits and tuxedo’s. A safe choice some would say but the below really stood out for us. They all look refined and polished for us these gents showed all in attendance how a tux is supposed to fit.

Darren Criss in Calvin Klein (bottom right) is a favorite for us because his suit is not black black but a charcoal colour showing black tie doesn’t strictly mean black.
A few of the men in attendance did however opt for some color. Hamish Bowler’s pink jacket is a homage to the events theme as the color is featured quite prominently in the exhibition.

We do however have to call out Mick Jagger for wearing trainers to such a formal event. Mick you have walked enough high fashion red carpets in your time to know that trainers do not belong there!
One of the biggest trends at the moment in men’s fashion is velvet jackets. Swizz Beatz and Tom Brady did the trend absolute justice. They both took a style risk with this but velvet jackets are great for formal occasions just remember to wear a different fabric for the trousers never head to toe velvet.

Let us know what you thought of the red carpet looks? Anyone we didn’t pick but you liked?
Can we also take a moment to appreciate Beyonce in this Givenchy creation!

This past Monday Csquared joined hundreds of South Africans in celebrating our local artists at the 18th MTN South African Music Awards. What we love most about the SAMA’s is the fashion, which is the past has been interesting to say the least.

Whats also great about such an event is the interaction over social media. For those of us who were unable to attend the live event we sat in front of our TVs Monday night with our smartphones and you were instantly part of the conversation. @ASHownsCHEKA worded it best when he said:

For those of you who weren’t able to catch us live on Twitter Monday night or just want to relive the madness that was #SAMA18, we put together some of the tweets from the days leading to the event, the yellow carpet and the live show.
Its no easy feat finding the right outfit for an awards show as big as the SAMA but Cape Town Street Mag Blogger @TankiEM knew when she needed a menswear look there was only one brand she could rely on:

As a Record of the Year nominee @theokgosinkwe was under pressure to look good. But Theo has always been a stylish dresser and definitely knows how to pull off a Csquared suit effortlessly.

For his first official outing as Csquared #TOPSWAG Style Icon Winner Mvelo Ncube was invited to #SAMA18, which of course excited his supporters like @Tee_Kolane:

Of course @Mvelo_N was excited about the SAMAs but he was even more excited about his Csquared outfit which our designer Wayne Govender helped him style.

@Mvelo_N also tweeted a few pics from his arrival at Sun City but we won’t share all those yet, he will share his VIP experience with you later this week on the blog.

Firstly, you can’t discuss the yellow carpet without discussing @somizi in David Tlale and Alexander McQueen heels.

We must admit we at Csquared always look forward to what Somizi will wear on any red/yellow carpet event because he always pushes fashion boundaries. He always stands out and while its not a look for everyone, we can’t help but applaud his fashion bravery.
As always the ladies took center stage on the yellow carpet but this year we must say some of the gents really did bring their fashion A-game to the yellow carpet. Naturally we love all those who wore Csquared on the carpet:
@iamDJSbu was stylin on night one of the SAMAS in this Csquared suit :

@TrevorMadondo in a Csquared Checked Jacket on Night One of the SAMAs:

@theokgosinkwe was a hit in this Csquared black and white look with red bow tie on the yellow carpet:

Jimmy Dludlu was on trend in a Csquared Velvet Jacked and Csquared Checked shirt and bowtie (congrats on the win):

Fashion Blogger @StyleGuideCT loved Jimmy’s look, while @Tee_Kolane knew on sight that it was Csquared:

What was really impressive about this years #SAMAFashion was how many of the guys out there went for color over plain black suits. These are some of our favorite looks from the evening:

While we did not address this trend in our What to wear to the SAMAs blogpost can we just repeat:

I think all gents are in agreement that if there is one thing they will remember about #SAMA18 it is @MinnieDlamini in this dress:

Well done to Randall Abrahams and all those involved on putting on a truly spectacular show. Till next year.
