  • CSquared Style Tips: The Summer Holiday Style Survival Guide

    image

December will see many of us traveling whether locally or internationally, so we have put together everything you need to know about looking your best whilst on holiday. With all the fashion essentials one holidayer needs, a few basics will ensure you’ve got an impeccable look all holiday long.

    Swimshorts

The essential piece of holiday kit – these will get more use than any other clothing in your suitcase. Holidays always guarantee plenty of poolside dips and beach bathing, making a quality pair of swimshorts essential. Needless to say, you get what you pay for, and there are plenty of price ranges to cater to everybody’s budget.

    image

    Dolce & Gabana | Swim Shorts S/S 13

Always go for the mid-thigh classic style. You really can’t go wrong. Block stripes and plain colors are the trophies of simplicity, and it’s always far better to select a timeless style over short-lived trends. when it comes to swimwear keep it simple, keep it understated. SA online menswear retails ThirtySixMan has a great selection of swimwear.

    image

    ThirtySixMan | Swimwear

    Flip Flops

Simplicity and comfort are the crucial factors when choosing your ideal flip-flop, as there’s nothing worse than blisters in between your toes. Go for something inoffensive that you can wear with ease. The secret to a solid flip-flop choice is to not think about it too much, after all, they are only flip flops.

    Havianas

    Havaianas

N.B. Flip flops painful no matter what you do? Try rubbing a little Vaseline onto the part that goes between your toes – works an absolute dream.

    Night Shoes

Take at least one other form of footwear. It’s essential. There are plenty of heat-friendly options this season that simultaneously ensure looking and feeling cool, and a certain smartness can be attained without the need for hyperformality. If you’re looking for something a little smarter, try the tasselled loafer or brogues. Going sockless is essential though, so keep that in mind.

    image

CSquared Menswear Brogues | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

Navy, camel and browns are the key shades here, and opt for suede or relaxed leather to keep things from going overboard; we want to be the right side of casual, and there’s no room for suit territory in the holiday suitcase.

    Sunglasses

Holidays mean you can wear sunglasses all day, every day without any judgement whatsoever. Just refrain from wearing them at night or even worse, in a nightclub. Wayfarers and Clubmasters are solid choices.

    image

CSquared Menswear Wayfarers | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

If you’re a rather clumsy sunglasses wearer, it’s probably best to buy a few ‘disposable’ pairs, as there’s always the chance they’ll go missing/get broken very quickly. On the flipside, if you’re a little more militant with sunglasses care, take your best shades and relax with the knowledge of greater quality and proper UV protection. Your facial shape ultimately dictates what shades suit you personally, so experiment with a few styles to see what works best for you.

    Hand Luggage

    Gucci Backpack

    Gucci Men’s Back Packs

You want plenty of room for all the aeroplane essentials if you are flying. The canvas knapsack is pretty much ideal for hand luggage, spacious without being sizeably offensive or preppy holdall if you’ve got the extra luggage.

    Chapel Holdall

    ThirtySixMan | Chapel Leather Bag

Have a great trip and an even better style survival kit.

  • CSquared Style Tips: Summer Weddings Style Inspiration

Wedding season is upon us! For the ladies there is always an abundance of choice, but for men it would appear the opposite is true.

Lets just start by saying jeans are not a suitable trouser (even if you wear black jeans) for a wedding. Many men make the mistake of thinking a formal suit means black trousers and jacket, a white shirt and a tie.

    StyleForum | Men’s Suits

Now although there is nothing wrong with this look, and it is indeed a very smart option, there are other routes to go down. Adding a spot of colour here and there, or even ditching the jacket in favor of a waistcoat, spices up your outfit and gives you a sophisticated and fashionable look.

    CSquared Menswear

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

If you want to take a side step from the traditional black suit, but not sure which colors will work together. A beige suit feels quite Gatsby-esque in its appearance, which thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s new take on the film is a popular trend at the moment.

    StyleForum | Men’s Suits

If you don’t want to step too far out of your comfort zone, then a dark navy suits is more practical. Standout by taking a traditional look and giving it a modern and elegant twist. A patterned pocket square or tie gives a much more fashion conscious look to the outfit without having to stand out too much with colour.

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

However, if it is a colored suit you are after, pick one that offers a nice injection of colour without being so bold it attracts lots of attention (you do not want to outshine the bride!)

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

Investing in a new suit jacket is a good way to spice up an outfit without having to shell out for a whole suit. A dinner jacket with contrast lapels and pocket flaps is a sophisticated way of injecting pattern and colour into an outfit.

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

If you already have the perfect pair of black trousers then a grey jacket is a great accompaniment. The contrast in colours is an ideal way to put a fashionable spin on a traditional look.

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

At weddings many men shed their jackets before the food is served, and they warm the backs of chairs for the rest of the night. A way to avoid looking like you’ve just finished a day at the office and keep a smart and dapper look, especially at a hot summer wedding, is to opt for a waistcoat instead.

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

A white shirt is a common choice for a formal occasion, but a colored or patterned shirt shouldn’t be overlooked.

CSquared Menswear | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

Avoid a wide tie or a bow tie unless you are part of the bridal party, skinny ties are a fashionable and popular choice, and a nice alternative should you have to wear a tie daily.

CSquared Menswear Ties | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

Top all this off with a smart pair of brogues or loafers and you have a very stylish wedding outfit.

CSquared Menswear Brogues | Avail At Markham & Stuttafords

We hope this has opened up some doors to a brighter, summer wedding wardrobe, and has shown that there are just as many options for men as there are for women, you just need to take the plunge and stay away from the black suit/white shirt combo!

    Happy wedding season.

  • CSquared Style Tips: How To Be The Most Stylish Gent At Your Christmas Party

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The shops are stocking up on crackers, mince pies, Christmas puddings, awful music and all the other guff that generally makes Christmas. As you get older its clear that the purpose  of Christmas changes quite dramatically. Once past the age of eighteen, it seems the sole purpose of the Christmas season is to consume as much alcohol as physically possible and how many of us will have to face the dreaded work Christmas party.

The work ‘Christmas Do’ is a bit of a strange event. Beside the obviously delicate balancing act of drinking and not embarrassing yourself, you also need to think about what you’re going to wear. Wearing a suit to the office doesn’t really provide you with the opportunity to showcase your true personal style; you can of course wear snazzy socks, a crazy pocket square or simply be fantastic at matching shirts and ties, but at the end of the day, you’re still wearing a suit, just like everyone else. So the Christmas party can be a good opportunity to show everybody just how well you can dress.

    Burberry Porsum | Fall/Winter Collection

    Key Considerations

With that said, here are a few things to consider:

    • Think about your office – who do you work with? Who is actually going to come? Do you get along with everyone? If things tend to be a little cold, don’t force your most fashion forward looks down their throats. Better to create subtle talking points.
    • Think about their style – how do they dress? Are they likely to be impressed by the more fashion forward elements of your style or would you risk sticking out like a sore thumb?
    • Consider what you are actually doing – is it in the office? Going for a meal and then for drinks?

With all this in mind, tailor your outfit to your situation – there is no such thing as a one size fits all look.

Look 1: Shirt & Jeans & Blazer Combination

Be Dapper | Navy Blazer and Jeans, perfectly tailored

A pair of jeans, a slim fit shirt (white or blue probably) and a fitted blazer is a winning combination whenever you wear it and where-ever you go. If you want to make it that little bit more interesting, try finding a shirt with some added details or with a pattern.

CSquared Menswear | Avail At  Markham & Stuttafords

    Look 2: Utilising Accents

If you do want to show off your fashionable wardrobe, or wear something you know that no one else will be wearing, try to keep things small. Rather than shouting in everyone’s face with your outfit of bold colours, crazy patterns or luxurious textures, inject some interest through your shoes or accessories. A flash of colour at the wrist or something a little different on the feet is a great talking point and will exude just enough fashion forwardness to show off your knowledge and confidence.

    Trashness | Parmigiani Fleurier Pershing

Likewise, a trend cut such as a double-breasted jacket (still in a muted colour) can be a subtle choice that hints you know what you are doing. Should you choose to take this approach with something fairly substantial, like your shoes, keep the rest of your outfit nice and simple – let the shoes do all the talking.

    CSquared Brogues
CSquared Menswear Brogues | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords
    Look 3: Pops of Color

Trashness | Braces x Bow Ties

Because this outfit is quite sharp, you can choose to keep things crisp and slim with Derbies or Oxfords, or on trend with monk straps. Keep things playful – you’ll find an outfit can be drastically altered simply by switching your footwear.
    CSquared Menswear Brogues
CSquared Menswear Brogues | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords
An important thing to remember here is just how formal your trousers are. Be wary of chinos that are too casual as this will change the whole aesthetic and might not suit the tailored upper half. To make sure you don’t experience this, you might find it easier to wear formal navy trousers. If you can afford to, I would suggest you make a statement by wearing a checked or velvet blazer. Just make sure your workmates will appreciate it.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

    Look 4: Formal Wear
A few of you will want to wear a dressed down suit. However, if you choose to go down this route, there are a few things to consider… Do you wear a suit every day? Please don’t wear a work suit, go for something bold or something classic but in a more statement colour and/or fabric. It’s worth remembering that not all navy suits look like business suits.
    Trashness | Morris Clothing Sweden

Once you’ve chosen your suit, look for ways to differentiate it from the kind of thing you would wear to work;whether this is through bold accessories, different textures or mixed aesthetics is up to you.

Trashness | Denim x Sport Coat

A denim shirt is a fantastic way to immediately dress down a suit and because it’s blue it will pair with every colour under the sun – you can even dress it up with a bow or knitted tie.

    CSquared Knitted Ties
CSquared Knitted Ties | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

We hope we have shown you outfits that cover almost every possible situation you could find yourself in. Remember that this is just a guide. It has been designed as a simple source of inspiration and all of the outfits we’ve shown are completely interchangeable – with just a little thought you can adapt them to suit your own purposes and image. By altering just one item, you can create something completely different and all of your own.

  • CSquared Style Tips: The Importance Of Neutral Tones

    Mens Fashion Magazine

Neutral colors can be a constant staple in any mans wardrobe, and not just the usual black, grey and white – there are also various shades of beiges, browns and cream. This is the way to add a bit of variety to what could be quite a dull outfit.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Avail Markham & Stuttafords

If you want to wear these desert tones then mix different shades on top and bottom, try a deep beige shirt with brown linen trousers for a cool summer evening, or pale chino shorts with a burnt orange top.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Avail Markham & Stuttafords

In terms of accessories then go for browns and leather, for example a leather satchel or wooden beaded bracelets and necklaces. Footwear can range from brogues to flip-flops, it depends if you want to look preppy or casual.

    Street Etiquette

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Avail Markham & Stuttafords

The beauty of wearing neutrals is that they can be worn over and over again in many different ways, one day you can be wearing a pair of shorts, flip-flops and a cream shirt, then the next you could be wearing that same shirt with some fitted neutral tone trousers, colored blazer and brogues.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Avail Markham & Stuttafords

If you have quite pale skin then try not to wear the shades with tones of red and orange, instead go for stone shades and soft browns; whereas if your skin is darker then you can go for stronger/darker browns and oranges.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Avail Markham & Stuttafords

Desert toned neutrals are the perfect way to add a bit of warmth to the not so sunny summer, so give them a try, but remember that neutral tones can be used throughout the year so make sure you keep them in your wardrobe.

  • CSquared Style Tips: How To Wear Colored Trousers

With winter finally behind us a pair of colored trousers is a great way to brighten the mood as well as your look. They sit well alongside almost anything in your existing capsule wardrobe and can create a striking look when combined and contrasted with heavy-duty clothing and materials.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Avail Markham & Stuttafords

Inversely, if you’re yet to get on the bright bandwagon, now would be a great time – not only would you be purchasing trousers that would effortlessly see out the summer, but you are investing in a piece that is set to last for plenty of seasons after.

    Pair With: Tailoring

A well-fitted, textured blazer alongside more daring trousers offers a whimsically stylish take on a timeless bit of tailoring. With a pocket square, brogues and tie completing the outfit, it is a look that is both contemporary and almost Dandy-like in appearance.

Mens Fashion Magazine| Summer Fashion:Colored Trousers

    Pair With: Off-duty Casual Wear

Pair with a neutral sweatshirt and a jacket of your choice and you’ve got a quick and easy look that requires minimal effort.

Mens Fashion Magazine| SS12 Mens Colored Trousers

As for footwear, throw on a simple pair of sneakers or boots and you’re good to go. If you feel the need to accessorize, a hat of some sort would cement the casual style.

  • CSquared Style Tips: The Art Of Going Sockless

As with most things when it comes to style, there are a few general guidelines that will help pull off the no-sock look without looking like a fool.

    Trashness | Street Style

Trashness | Tommy Ton at Pitti Uomo

The first of these is to bear in mind your surroundings – i.e. the weather. The Spring/Summer season is the perfect time for going sockless. If it’s blowing a gale and raining outside, its best to wear socks.

The second is to be aware of where you are heading and is probably the most important of the two. A stylish gentleman always dresses appropriately for his intended arrival. For example, heading out for a few drinks with a couple of friends? Skip the socks. Heading off to a black tie event organised by your boss with a couple of investment banking firms? Might want to stick those good old navy’s mate. Knowing where and when to bust out your ankles is everything these days.

The Premium Life | Street Style Milan

But other than those two points guys, why not go without? You may find, not only is it more comfortable but it could help you feel more at ease, which in turn will make you feel more confident in whatever you are wearing that day.

Regardless of whether it’s a navy pinstripe suit or some beat up blue jeans and t-shirt combo, going sockless adds a nice little relaxed nonchalant twist to any look. Besides, like Tom Browne said “ankle is the new male cleavage”. And seriously, who doesn’t like cleavage?

    Formal Sockless Lookbook

Seeing as we are trying to convince you to leave the socks at home more regularly this year, we have compiled some lookbook inspiration for you all. Although most would never consider going sockless as ‘formal’, here are a few outfits that include suiting and an overall smarter aesthetic:

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham, Stuttafords & HOM Store

    Casual Sockless Lookbook

Now this is where going sockless comes into its own. Take a look at the  looks below and consider how you can go sockless with jeans, chinos, trousers or shorts this summer:

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham, Stuttafords & HOM Store

    Tips & Tricks

If you are new to this whole sockless game, here are a few tips:

    • Wear in your shoes – regardless of what style of shoe you’ve got and the material they are made from.
    • Be Sneaky – If you know that you are going to be wearing a heavy wingtip for a good ten hours straight, then maybe a sock of some kind might be wise? But why not invest in some low-profile loafer socks to keep your ankles free, but your feet blister free.
    • Get Pre-emptive – Although going without socks can be a great feeling, it can do horrible things to your feet. Think about bathing them in hot water regularly and using talcum powder if you have particularly sweaty feet. Actually gents get a pedicure every 4-5 months to make sure they stay their best.

  • CSquared Style Tips: How To Do Colour Right This Summer

Color gives off a more jovial look/aesthetic and over the last couple of months we at CSquared have encouraged you to embrace color in order to set yourself apart and showcase some true personality. But how do you use color without looking like a fool. The everyday male needs to begin to learn the general rules and start by integrating colors naturally within their current looks.

Ola De Color | GQ Spain

The Faux Pas – Colour Confetti

Outfitting yourself with an unconsidered selection of colors may make you look as if you have no clue as to what you are doing. It is generally not our fault, as menswear has long been dominated by neutrals and traditional pieces. We have really only begun to embrace color within the last 12 months, and it has led to guys utilising some awful color combinations as they are not aware of the basics of color matching or coordinating.

    Color Clash | GQ Japan

Be aware that even if the pieces you wear may look great individually, it does not mean that they are bound to work in any circumstance. We have all seen this happen too often; a great looking piece is ruined by the overall outfit due to color mismanagement.

    Know Your Colors

For a look to work, you first need to know the basics of color. Take additional care on how similar, complementary and contrasting colors combine, and keep a simple color wheel either in your mind or on your smartphone the next time you go shopping.

    The Colour Wheel

Being aware of what colors you have in your wardrobe and taking note the next time you make a purchase will give you a better idea of how to combine colors in an effective manner without going over the top. If you are regularly inspecting your wardrobe and taking an honest approach to where it needs work, then you should be aware of what colors/neutrals currently dominate your wardrobe and this will help sculpt your future purchases to colors that work with your current personal style.

    Know Your Sources of Inspiration

Ola De Color | GQ Spain

While every individual has a particular style and their own personal sources of inspiration, keep in mind that others can be wrong. Looking at how stylists create an outfit, combine colors and textures and wear clothes in general is a very good source of inspiration, but keep in mind that not all they say is gold.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

Looking at stylish friends and acquaintances can be a great way of picking up color combinations or simple layering techniques but that doesn’t mean it will always be something you can incorporate into your OWN look. You don’t have to copy; inspiration is just that – adapt it for you personally.

    CSquared Summer Collectiom 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Durban Fashion Fair 2012

    Neutralising Colours

One key way of pulling off multiple bold colors is via a technique known as neutralising, and it can be the KEY principle that makes or breaks your look. A neutralising color is something which cancels out the bolder color, so drawing less attention to it.

    Image

For example, by layering a black cardigan over a bright blue shirt, the black cardigan works to neutralise (and sometimes even cancel out) the effect of the bolder color.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

What you need to bear in mind when utilising bold colors is that you should be trying to anchor or neutralise them by integrating neutral layers and key pieces. Many of you will already have the items you need, such as blazers, knitwear, shirts, overcoats and macs, in timeless colors such as brown, grey, black, white and navy. Subtle patterns or graphic prints on things like t-shirts can also draw attention away from bold colors by catching the eye.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

An outfit choice that works for a number of occasions is a classic minimalist look. This approach gives you clean lines and incorporates just two or three ‘colors’, which tend to be the classical neutrals such as black, brown, grey and white. Just because everyone is embracing color right now, it doesn’t means you have to – this minimalist approach is timeless and helps create a very neat overall look that works almost every time.

There is no foolproof way of wearing colors, you have to be willing to experiment and find out what works for you.

  • CSquared Style Tips: The White Summer Suit: How to Wear

The white suit, while impossibly seasonal and perennially underused, is a devilishly stylish bit of tailoring. You would probably be surprised to know that the versatility of white tailoring rivals the timeless staples that are navy and grey suits. Consider the white suit your summer equivalent of the two.

VMan Magazine | Fall 2012 Issue

While slightly impractical for most, the neutral colour makes it much easier to wear than first perceived. A white suit should be treated neither as a work nor a business suit, because it’s not. Nor should it be worn in weather that doesn’t resemble the height of summer. This seasonal staple is meant solely for off-duty wear and only when the mercury is pushing the limits.

How To Wear: The Full White Suit

Hot Guys Wearing White Suits | Brioni Man S/S 12

Firstly, the white suit like any other suit has to be well-fitted – there is no room for error here. Keep the suit slim in the waist, arms and legs. The shoulders should not slouch off your own and the trousers should have very little break – they should be kissing your shoes, not hugging them.

    Look #1

    Jon Kortajarena | Tom Ford

If you’re aiming to keep an air of formality about you, try pairing your suit with a striking gingham shirt. Blue gingham works with block white.

GQ | The New White Suit

Alongside some loafers/monk straps (black or brown, it’s your own discretion) and accessorized with a well presented pocket square, a full suit look would be hard pushed to fail.

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

    Look #2

When it comes to an evening out, look to contrast the white suit with a black shirt. The monochromatic combination is incredibly arresting and works best when the tie is left back in the drawer and a button or two loosened up.

Hot Guys Wearing A White Suit Tumblr

Stick with black for the accessories – try a dotted pocket square and dark dress shoes, slippers or loafers depending on occasion and preference.

    Look #3

The white suit can be carried off in a casual manner. Consider pairing your new venture with a plain tee and trainers, or even some colored suede buck or derby shoes.

    Listal | Jon Kortajarena

A grey crew neck t-shirt is a classic part of the capsule wardrobe, but you can always change up the look with a wide (not low) scoop or V-neck. If you’re opting for trainers, keep them simple and structured; look for something with minimal branding, a so-called “grown up trainer” if you will.

    How To Wear: As Separates

With any good suit, you always have the option of splitting the jacket and trousers and using them in separate outfits – one of the many benefits of a tailored piece.

Fashion Bomb Daily | Street Style NYC Fashion Week

    Separates: White Suit Jacket

Starting with the jacket, at first it might seem a little intimidating, what do you pair with a white blazer? Treat it like a staple navy blazer: pair it with everything! This mentality immediately makes it a far more clearer and welcoming option.

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

    Look #1

For this first look, try a daring shorts and jacket mixture for your own personal take on the ‘shorts suit’. Start by pairing the white suit blazer with timeless, well-fitted shorts.

    A Gentleman’s Row | Summer Street Style

An on-trend printed short sleeve shirt will stop you from overheating and ensures the look will still make a statement if the weather becomes somewhat jacket unfriendly.

    Look #2

You could easily swap out the shorts for chinos and the sandals for something more structured if you wanted a more covered up and conventional way to blend a white blazer into your attire.

Gentlemen Suits | Summer Street Style

Suit separates do not have to mean casual. Try working some white into your summer wedding looks – the “don’t wear white at a wedding” adage only applies to our female counterparts, luckily.

Hot Guys Wearing White Suit Tumblr

Go back to the favored black and white contrast by rocking your white suit jacket with a pair of black suit trousers. Keep the shoes and tie black and the shirt a safe neutral – sky blue is a great option – for an easy but standout formal look.

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

You could decide to inject some colour via a pocket square (a rich burgundy would be a smart choice) or you can tie it to the rest of your outfit with a black version.

    Separates: White Suit Trousers

The bottom half of your white suit is a true summer essential in itself and should, like your blazer, be treated as if it were a timeless pair of navy chinos or even jeans – yes, they go with everything.

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

    Look #1

Bring some continental flair by utilising white trousers alongside a navy blazer. The navy/white, dark/light contrast will create a really sharp look, whilst simultaneously producing an underlying nautical influence – a major trend each and every spring/summer.

    Outsanding Attire | Wedding Fashion

A grey t-shirt is the perfect nuetral that will work alongside both colours, not against them. Black penny loafers add another touch of timelessness to the whole ensemble and again create a light/dark contrast between the trousers and shoes. Accessorise with an on-trend neckerchief and classic pocket square.

    Look #2

A print shirt in the mould of the Prada spring/summer 2012 advertising campaign is a great way to adopt the print trend, and using white trousers is the ticket to pulling it off.

    Michael Pitt | Prada S/S 12 Campaign

Opt for a coloured number in a complimentary tone to the shirt in order to give the outfit coherrence and really show off your sartorial skills.

  • CSquared Menswear Style Guide: Smart-Casual Outfit Inspiration

The balancing act between the smart-casual divide is what can make this particular mode of attire an uphill battle. Too smart and you risking looking overdressed, too casual and you can appear sloppy in comparison to others. Conventional style wisdom does however argue that “it’s better to be overdressed than under-dressed”.

Esquire Style Guide | How to Do Summer Smart

The trick to nailing smart or business casual is to take your lead from the first word of this dress code. In terms of the finished product, you are ultimately going to be leaning slightly to the smarter side of the spectrum, so tuck in that shirt, shine those shoes and let’s begin.

    Simple Smart-Casual

The most basic of smart casual outfits consists of a chino, shirt, blazer and smart shoe combination. With the resurgence of chinos as the popular go-to leg wear choice, they’ve become an acceptable option to wear as a smart-casual piece, in place of more tailored trousers.

    Men’s Spring Fashion Guide | D’Marge

A block-colour shirt in a traditional hue i.e. white, blue, pink etc. is a safe option, but a simple patterned shirt could be used to bring some personality and individuality to a look. A navy blazer is one of the most versatile pieces in a man’s wardrobe – it seemingly tops almost every ‘essential’ list – so it’s definitely worth investing.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

Chinos in a safe, neutral colour such as grey are impossible to do wrong, especially when married with a pair of rich chocolate brown shoes. If you’re opting for a belt, keep it slim, smart and matching the leather of your shoes – you don’t want fall victim to a rookie style mistake.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

To add some punch to your ensemble, accessorize with a pocket square. For true smart casual, however, leave the tie back home and the top button undone.

    Downtown

Denim continues to emerge as a more appropriate choice for offices within the creative industries and those with a penchant for ‘dress-down Fridays’. When it comes to jeans in a smart-casual setting keep them dark, clean and well fitted.

    CSquared Menswear

    CSquared Menswear | CSquared MBFWJ

A plain white shirt and casual blazer gives this look an edge of refinement. Alternatively, you could opt for a cardigan or waistcoat while accessorizing with a tie. Keep the shoes suitably smart, depending on where you’re going – desert boots or brogues are often suitable for most occasions.

CSquared Menswear | Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

    Making Use of Knitwear

    Pack Dressing | Details Magazine

Knitwear is a great way to add some warmth and another dimension to your smart-casual looks on colder days. A classic V-neck is the perfect base, especially if used alongside a tie to smarten up some denim. Alternatively, you could add texture through a cable knit or chunky cardigan. For a slightly different approach, consider a long-sleeved polo shirt type jumper over a shirt and tie pairing.

    Casual-Smart

Earlier we mentioned the simple art of taking your lead from the smart or business element of the dress code. For this we are going to turn that advice on its head, as for some occasions a more casual approach is required. Put this technique to use only where you know the host and perhaps expect them to turn out slightly more casual than smart.

Wardrobe Upgrades | Esquire Magazine Style Guide

A pair of mature trainers is certainly worth considering when looking to dress down a look. Equally, if you don’t quite feel comfortable with that option, opt for suitably structured casual oriented alternatives.

  • CSquared Style Tips: The Importance of Planning Ahead

Preparation is the key to success. We hear this all the time because it’s true. Preparation really IS the key to success and it applies to almost every aspect of your life.

This principle also applies to our wardrobes, outfits and style. At any time of year, a poorly planned outfit will stick out like a sore thumb; it will look ill prepared, terribly executed and most definitely won’t be an accurate depiction of your undoubtedly fantastic styling abilities.

    GQ Style China | Spring/Summer 2011

Good preparation can not only mean the difference between looking a mess and looking tailored, but also whether you are too hot or cold, whether you stay dry or get soaked through or whether you have everything you will need for the day - planning your outfit doesn’t just mean your clothes.

A bit of careful thought before an event can save you time and, most importantly, will make you feel more confident in what you are wearing. It also gives you the opportunity to picture looks in your mind, improving your outfit creation and making sure you make the absolute most of your wardrobe.

So what should we be thinking about whilst planning our outfits?

    Getting Your Clothes Right

Wearing the right clothes is the single most important part of planning your outfit. You can probably cope with a forgotten phone or your lunch, but mess up with your clothes and your day will probably be ruined.

Here are things to bear in mind whilst preparing your outfits in advance:

    1. Check The Weather

    Numéro Homme China | Spring/Summer 2011

Take a good hard look at the weather forecast, especially as we are in between seasons right now. If you have a good idea of what is going on around you then you can adjust your outfit accordingly; wear your leather boots rather than those suede loafers or think about adding another layer for the morning and evening -you can always take it off.

    2. Layer Up Properly

    ‘Atomic!’ | Men’s Folio

Proper layering will keep you much warmer than just throwing your winter jacket over the top – by wearing lots of thinner layers you have more flexibility with what you can take off or put back on, which in turn makes you much better prepared for fluctuations in temperature.

    3. Appropriacy

    Numéro Homme China | Spring/Summer 2011

There probably isn’t anything worse than turning up at your destination woefully under or over dressed, it marks you out as someone that either doesn’t care or clearly hasn’t understood the situation – definitely something to be avoided. You need to think very carefully about where you are going, what you are doing and how appropriate your clothes will be.

    4. What Are You Doing?

    GQ Style China | Spring/Summer 2011

You need to make sure you dress for what you are doing. Your leather soled brogues might not be the best footwear for a wander on the beach. Remembering these basic details will give your outfit a real edge and ensure that you don’t find yourself wearing something that doesn’t fit the situation.

    5. Think Fabrics

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Durban Fashion Fair 2012

Fairly self explanatory really, think carefully about the fabrics you are wearing: a lightweight cotton chino won’t hold up to the cold as well as a full on cord or wool trouser and a cotton knit will retain much less warmth than something in lambswool. Check out last weeks post on Dressing Sharp in the Summer Heat.

    The Importance of Versatile Clothing

Adaptable pieces of clothing should be seen as the building blocks of any successful modern wardrobe, providing you with the versatility that allows you to create multiple looks no matter what the season or occasion.

CSquared Menswear Showcase at Women in Mining Lekgotla 2012

    Sort Your Bag

Planning your outfit doesn’t just mean organising your clothes. Your bag is an extension of your look – it can become an important part of the outfit as a whole and has the added benefit of being able to hold things you might need during the day.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

As much as you want to be prepared, you don’t want to be overloaded. Lugging around a bag of things that you probably aren’t going to need could prove to be very tiresome and is equally unnecessary. Aside from the basics that inhabit your bag on a permanent basis, chop and change its contents based on what you really need, and feel confident in the knowledge that you have everything you require to look good and be prepared for any situation that arises.

CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

It is really helpful to visualise outfits before you wear them; it gives you more confidence in what you are wearingbecause you know it worked in your mind. It also improves your styling and pushes you to try new combinations, making use of items that you previously hadn’t thought to put together.

  • CSquared Style Tips: Dressing Sharp In The Summer Heat

Hot weather, unlike cooler temperatures, necessitates that we do more with less. Beautiful weather creates a more relaxed attitude that translates into flexible dress codes that lean towards comfort and summer weather utility but how does a modern day gentleman dress for the hot summer weather while still looking presentable?

    The Guise | Summer Look

Today we will discuss general guidelines to hot weather dressing, the different styles of shirts, and warm weather jackets.

Hot Weather Dressing General Guidelines – Clean, Light & Understated

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Durban Fashion Fair 2012

These three words sum up how a sharp dressed man clothes himself during the summer months.

Clean: A gentleman is showered, well-groomed, and his clothing is free from stains. He realizes that although he may perspire, he does not have to smell nor look like he stepped out of a sauna. If you need to shower twice a day, then do so. Use antiperspirant deodorant, and consider soaps with menthol that will help cool your body. His hair is washed and cut regularly, with excess hair on the back of the neck trimmed, and treat your skin to lotions that improve health and appearance.

Light: Wear light colored clothing and select fabrics made with breathable weaves and natural fibers such as cotton, linen, or tropical weight wool (perfect for summer’s formal events). Looser fits facilitate airflow, but do not take this to mean you should wear a full size (or three) larger than what your body size calls for. Remember that dark colors do not reflect light but rather absorb it and all other factors being constant, are thus hotter. On a sunny day, a white long sleeve button-down cotton shirt will be much cooler than a black polyester T-shirt.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Durban Fashion Fair 2012

Understated: A gentleman wears quality garments that have cuts and patterns that compliment his figure and attitude – his clothing never detracts from the ladies in his company. He pays attention to unstated dress codes, plans accordingly, and shows up in accordance so that he can enjoy the companionship of those around him.

    Summer Shirt Styles

Ralph Lauren | Kontra Plan Magazine

    • The T-shirt

The T-shirt is as casual as it gets. When wearing a T-shirt, ensure the fabric is 100% cotton and that it is not so thin as to be see-through. Pay attention to proper fit in the torso area – too loose of a shirt only makes you look smaller than you are while too tight of a shirt makes you look like an overstuffed sausage.

    Details | March 2012

However, think twice about wearing a T-shirt if you can just as easily wear a Polo, short sleeve, or long sleeve button-up - in most situations a short sleeve collared shirt is simply a better choice because of its versatility. Summer picnics, informal parties, and Sunday morning brunch can all be attended in style with a short sleeve button dress shirt.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Durban Fashion Fair 2012

    • The Short Sleeve Polo

As its name suggests, the polo shirt has it’s origins on the fields of sport where its moisture wicking properties and style made it the choice of gentleman athletes. Reserve the polo for true casual events on weekends. Unless it’s your company’s uniform, consider wearing a tasteful button down short sleeve during the week.

    Ralph Lauren | Polo Shirt

When it comes to colors and patterns, polo shirts are afforded more freedom in their range of acceptable hues and contrast. They are one of the few exceptions where a man can wear bright & bold colors and not be accused of trying to draw attention to himself. Fabrics types are either a smooth weave or a more casual rough weave with visible texture; you want to choose polos made from cotton, although up to 15% of other fibers types is acceptable as they may be used to enhance performance, fit, and comfort.

    • The Button-Down Short Sleeve

The most under utilized shirt in a man’s wardrobe is the button-down short sleeve shirt. A step up from the polo, this shirt style is often avoided because of the difficulty in achieving a “great look.” A button down short sleeve that’s too large or too small has its weaknesses amplified by its inability to hide behind another garment or even itself. It’s imperative to pay attention to fit. Try taking these shirts to a tailor; you’d be amazed at how much a slight alteration can improve appearances.

Trashness | Short Sleeves & Bow Tie

A short sleeve dress shirt needs to fit properly at the shoulder points and along the torso. Sleeve lengths can vary but they should cover at least 25 to 80 percent of the bicep (as measured from shoulder point to elbow). Understand the less bicep covered the more casual the shirt becomes.

    CSquared Summer Collection

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

Checks that would normally overpower a long sleeve dress shirt or look ridiculous on a polo shirt somehow are tempered by the compromising features found in the short sleeve dress shirt.

    • The Long Sleeve Dress Shirt

Although not most men’s first choice in 90 degree plus weather, it is a more formal option than its short sleeve cousin and often the only choice for work. If wearing the long sleeve dress shirt during the day, select a light color, and to avoid being swallowed up by the sea of simple white’s, consider a lightly patterned fabric that tastefully suggests individuality.

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Durban Fashion Fair 2012

A long sleeve shirt rolled up to the mid-forearm or beyond, is a very stylish look preferred by many over the short sleeve button-up. It’s actually dressier than a true short sleeve because it gives the wearer the option of unrolling the sleeves

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | CSquared x 36MAN Midnight Fashion Express

    Wearing a Shirt Un-tucked

    Trashness | Tuck It In

There are those who say a shirt should always be tucked in; but shirts can look very stylish worn un-tucked. The key is making sure the length of the shirt and height of jeans/shorts overlap by the right amount. Aim for a 2 to 4 inch overlap depending on your size and the type of shirt; give T-shirts less overlap while button down short sleeves can have more (especially if it has a tail).

    CSquared Summer Collection 2012

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Fashion By The Sea 2012

A general rule of thumb is if you are covering more than 50% of your backside the shirt is too long – the good news here is that shortening a shirt is fairly simple.  Finally note that the un-tucked style looks best on the younger man, especially when he is wearing jeans. Although you may think you are the exception (don’t we all), past middle age,d the un-tucked shirt begins to look unkempt.

    The Summer Jacket

Weddings, outdoor parties, and other events that call for a professional presentation in hot weather make the summer jacket a necessity. So what’s the difference between a summer jacket and a regular blazer or sports coat?

    Details | March 2012

Cotton is king during the summer months; its natural wicking properties along with its strength and durability make it the choice for those looking to stay cool and get years of wear. However, because of their tendency to wrinkle, they do require frequent attention and are considered less casual – because of this we recommend a man have at least two well fitting suits in his wardrobe before purchasing a cotton jacket.

Linen – like cotton, has the perfect summer characteristics of wicking away moisture and dissipating heat. However, linen fabrics are often rougher and easily wrinkle. A well informed gentleman realizes linen fabric is the most durable of fabrics, and a classic linen sports coat can last a lifetime if taken care of.

CSquared Menswear Summer Collection | Fashion By The Sea 2012

Unlined and Half-Lined Jackets – Completely unlined jackets are perfect for warm weather as that they dispense with entire layers of fabric. However, these unlined and thus unstructured jackets are by definition less formal than their more rigid brethren and look best matched with casual cotton garments supported by classic accessories. Half-lined jackets still retain their structure (linings & shoulder pads) but eliminate lining on the lower half of the jacket.
