As our Csquared man-on-the-ground, we asked #TOPSWAG Style Icon Winner Mvelo Ncube to share his thoughts on the looks and trends from this years Durban July…here’s what he had to say;
This past week saw the great annual migration by the who’s who in the S.A entertainment and fashion to Durban…bags and suit / dress cases all in hand. A horse race event more popularly known for the fashion and who wore what by whom than the actual horses.
Some took the theme, “A Material World”, more seriously than others, encompassing the use of synthetic fibres and promoting the going green natural and organic initiative.
For those of us who weren’t as brave to but wished to show an understanding of the theme a floral printed shirt and a green jacket.
The event is formal in nature, and the theme doesn’t necessarily have to be followed, best dressed guys there were in classic black, navy or grey suits. Musician Stoan went for a Csquared Checked Jacket and Da Les who was also dressed by Csquared wore a white shirt and navy suit.
And there are those who missed the memo and thought it was the “Dubai July” and some whose main purpose was just to arrive.
All in all it was a great day, with beautiful people (mostly), heres to the next !!
- Mvelo Ncube, Csquared Menswear #TOPSWAG Style Icon Winner 2012

By now.. all going to Durban July have their looks sorted.
That was the hard part, but with an all-day event as big Durban July, with cameras at every turn, you want to stay looking your best way into the night.
Csquared has a few tips that should have you looking fresh all day:

- Roll up the cuffs on your trousers especially where the area is wet or muddy.
- If you spill on your best pair of white pants, attack the stain as soon as possible to have the best chance of getting it out.
- When you wear a white top, wear a darker colored jacket you can button over your whites to protect them from stains.
- Inspect the pants each time you take them off so you can treat any spills or spots right away, while they’re still fresh.
- White is one color that needs to be washed after each wearing.

- Read the manufacturer’s label to determine how to clean your velvet clothing. Some velvet fabrics, such as knit velvet and fine velvet with plain weave, must be dry cleaned. Others, such as crushed velvet, can be machine washed.
- Never iron velvet. The heat and weight of the iron will crush the velvet pile and leave an imprint. Irons can also scorch the fabric.
- Use a steamer to remove mild creases. Turn the garment inside out and point the nozzle of a steamer at the creases and folds. You may also hang the item in a steam-filled bathroom.
- If you happen to spill a drink on your velvet jacket, do not blot the spot. Blotting velvet when it is wet will press the pile down and ruin the fabric. Instead, shake as much of the moisture off as possible and let the item dry.
- Take damaged velvet clothing to a professional dry cleaner. Hope remains for velvet with stubborn folds, crushed pile and stains. Dry cleaners often have special tools that can lift velvet pile again.

“The best defense is a good offense.” - preventive care is the best way to keep your delicate suede items looking new. These tips will help you with those pesky stains:
- Treat your shoes with protective spray against water damage and stains.
- Keep the shoes away from water as much as possible.
- If they get wet, never dry with heat dryer. Sop the water with towel and let your suede shoes dry naturally. Repair the nap with the suede brush.
- You can also restore the nap with steam. Hold your suede above a steaming pot.
- When cleaning always apply your cleaning product or treatment method on a small area to prevent disasters.
- Cleaning is generally accomplished by either gently brushing with fine brushes (for dry marks) or by lightly soaking with piece of cloth (for wet stains). Never use hard pressure and fast motions.
- It is reported that using a nail file can remove mud and scuff marks on shoes - do so at your own risk.

Plaid or checks have been hugely popular for the last couple of years and every year we see a wealth of new designs, colours and fits. They have become a wardrobe staple for men and women alike.

A simple and cheap way of incorporating this new idea straight into your looks, without changing your shirt, is to keep the sleeves rolled down and cuffs done up, perhaps even doing up the top button which immediately smartens up the appearance of the shirt in general. This simple change would work very well with the more established indie/mod and Geek chic/preppy looks.

If you really want to make a statement try mixing checks with your work wear.

When trying to match a plaid/checked shirt with a tie, avoid the same patterns, introduce some variation in size or in the case of stripes, their direction. Try to introduce another size of check in your tie, and then pick out one colour in the shirt to complement.

With a plaid/checks you’re better off choosing a solid tie. Again it should complement one subtle colour within the shirt. Of course if you’re feeling brave you can match it with a plaid or checked tie or bowtie, but as ever, make sure the patterns are not exactly the same as the shirt.

Another way of incorporating plaid into your suit without going for a shirt is to use a plaid tie with your block colour shirts, a statement piece, without the fuss.

Using a solid tie however, is by far the easiest way to mix and match without taking the risk of becoming a walking optical illusion, the different pattern of the shirt should make the statement, not the effect you have on the eyes of the people you walk past.

The same goes for colours, the mixed patterns and the bolder designs will stand out more than your plain white shirt and tie combination, so you don’t necessarily need choose bright colours. In fact, you would do better to choose more muted colours, greys, blues etc which will take the edge off the pattern and retain an air of formality and class.

By choosing to use checks in this way you mark yourself out from the ranks of the suit wearing masses, you make more of a statement and you continue to develop your wardrobe along the way. Best of all, because check shirts are so casual, you can dress it back down for a night out after work.
When done right, it can be a real alternative to the other plain old shirts you keep dragging out day after day.

Mark Zuckerberg is having a good year. The 28 year old billionaire bought Instagram US$ 1 billion and today Facebook is going IPO,meaning that the company will finally be open to stock holders where the likes of Wall Street and even you can purchase a part of the social media company. But with the estimated US$100 billion that is supposedly coming his way, you have got to wonder whether Mark has plans to invest in a new wardrobe.

Zuckerberg is rarely seen out of his daily ‘uniform’ that consists of dowdy college sweaters, sweat-drenched Adidas shower flip flops, and tattered baggy jeans. One blog asked what we have all been thinking ” Can all the money in the world transform someone from HTML geek to sartorial chic?” Fashionista then went one step further and rounded up several fashion experts that include designers, buyers and industry leaders to see what kind of style advice they would give Silicon Valley’s hottest star.
Wouldn’t it be nice to see Zuckerberg in a suit on his big day? As a man with billions at his command, it’s only right he look the part too…

What they say: Kurt Soller from Esquire chose a blue fitted slim suit tailored to show Zuckerberg as full on corporate. John Jannuzzi chose a look from Billy Reid’s Menswear Collection as he feels it “…would be a good match for him, it’s approachable but doesn’t read too old or ‘captain of industry’.” Ashley Math went for a well-fitting sport coat, a washed button down shirt paired with a cool, skinny knit tie. “Basically, something that says ‘pulled-together’ and totally relaxed all at once.”
What we say: As Mark is new to the whole formal wear game, we feel he should probably start by slowly incorporating the basic elements. He doesn’t have to go full formal wear on the first try but he could definitely do with with a fitted blazer, custom made shirt and a skinny tie. He would still be formal and the skinny tie would be a nice nod to geek chic. If Mark is feeling a little adventurous, he could wear a tie with stripes or a jacket with small details like a contrasting fabric lining on the lapel and pockets of his blazer.

We think casual Zuckerberg is something that could probably happen and would be fairly easy for our billionaire to adapt.
What they say: Csquared could not agree more with Banana Republic creative director Simon Kneen when he says “No wardrobe is complete without an item blazer. Throwing a blazer on is the easiest way to add polish to any look. A modern cut is also slimming and nods to the tailoring trend without a complicated approach – effortless panache at its best.” Lawrence Schlossman, associate editor at Complex thinks Mark “…could easily adopt a casual, soft tailored look and feel just as comfortable, while finally looking like the wildly influential and important guy we all know him to be.” Bumsuk Choi, designer at General Idea goes for an even more relaxed look for Mark by styling him in a simple pair of fitted chinos and a colorful short sleeve shirt to accent the chinos.
What we say: One of things we noticed about Mark’s day to day look is he likes to wear grey t-shirts. He could up his casual look by opting for a checked shirt. It would be a chic and comfortable alternative to Mark’s standard gray t-shirt. and they’ll add color and style to his wardrobe.

Mark Zuckerberg’s trademark is a hoodie. Comfortable and warm enough for the California winters but its important to invest in a good winter coat.

What they say: Designer Richard Chai doesn’t want to completely change Zuckerberg’s casual look rather he’d “…like to edge him up a bit by adding a play on plaids and patterns layered up. Make him more of a rockstar that he is for being the founder of Facebook.” Ken Downing, fashion director at Neiman Marcus, doesn’t want to rid Mark of his signature hoodie look, “Stick with it and take it to the next level. I love the look of a hoodie under a jacket.”
What we say: Definitely adding some colour to Mark’s largely grey and blue wardrobe, we think he should invest in at least one black winter coat he can wear on formal occasions. By adding accessories like scarves, he can add some much needed colour into his wardrobe.

Do you agree with a more polished Mark Zuckerberg? What trends would you like to see him incorporate into his wardrobe?

Boardwalk Empire is an American TV series set in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the Prohibition era. The series has received widespread critical acclaim particularly for its visual style.
Recently Michael Pitt who plays the role of James “Jimmy” Darmody modeled in Prada Men’s Spring/Summer2012 ad campaign. The Italian fashion house has also released a behind the scenes video of the campaign shoot.
Playing the guitar, boxing a little bit, Michael plays a Hollywood Golden Boy wearing serious Prada threads.
I think Pitt was asked to be the face of the S/S12 Prada Menswear ad campaign is because of his role in Boardwalk Empire. If you have ever watched this show you will know everything is tailor made, so it fits perfectly and everyone looks seriously styling.

Lush tweed and wool suits are worn along with brightly colored ties with elegant collar pins to hold them up. Fedoras and newsboy caps were a necessity and not a prop.

Back then, the finishing of cloth was not as refined as it is today and most fabrics were considerably heavier, and consequently draped nicely. The cut of the clothes is certainly different. Suits were fitted snugly around shoulder, and had little to no padding. The trousers were much slimmer than in the 1930’s and did not have pleats. Unlike today though they had a high raise and were of course worn with suspenders.

The fashion is pure American gangster. The way these men dressed showed power and they took such care to perfect their looks, you got to respect that. The blue coat above blows my mind, with wide lapels and the black collar.
By taking a few elements from this era as inspiration you can add this mafioso swag to your modern day look:
Played by Steve Buscemi, is part politician/ part gangster and All style.

He rules Atlantic City in a range of tailored three piece suits with his signature red carnation pinned in the button hole. The red carnation serves as a perfect accessory to all his looks, giving them a stylish pop of color. These days wearing a red carnation everyday may not as fashionable but with accessories such as bowties, pocket squares or shoes you can definitely add to the elegance of your outfit as Nucky’s red carnation did for his.
Csquared Brogues R899, Csquared Wayfarers R699, Csquared Checked Bow tie R175, Csquared blue with white polka dots Pocket square R175.
Played by Michael Pitt is the former protege of Nucky, which is evident in his style. Soldier turned gangster Jimmy sported a more casual look in earlier episodes but as his status rises so does his sharp style.

The above blue and grey check 3-piece suit is by far one of my favorite looks from the show. Simple, elegant and sharp. A great modern twist on this would be:

Csquared shirt R595, Csquared waistcost R599, Csquared tie R175
Played by Michael Kenneth Williams, is a racketeer and unofficial leader of the African-American community in Atlantic City.

I loveChalky’s style! His flamboyant tailoring with lots of check patterns and he’s not afraid to wear a bow tie! This is a man after my very own Csquared heart. The Csquared Winter Collection 2012 is bursting with checks and bright, bold bowties and ties which makes achieving Chalky’s look easy.

This show deserves every award it wins. It is an amazingly true depiction of life and fashion in the 1920’s but then again no one does the 1920s gangster era quite like Martin Scorsese.
