All too often men take their style for granted. What does your personal style say about you? Maybe you think that an old pair of sweats or comfortable baggy jeans and a t-shirt says that you want to relax, but to the people that see you that look says that you are sloppy and just don’t care. It doesn’t matter if you are just out grabbing a cup of coffee or heading over to hang with the guys, if people see you out dressed like that they are forming an opinion about you. And the opinion they form isn’t just about what kind of dresser you are; it’s about who you are as a person.

We have said it time and time again - people will form an opinion about who you are based on how you look. A first impression is formed almost instantly and is very difficult to overcome. The clothes you wear, your hairstyle and facial hair all form an image. That image can be something you choose to create or something you inherit by default.

In trying to create your own style, the first step is deciding what you want people to think of you. What do you want your style to say about you? If you want people to think you are successful, you must look successful. If you want people to think you are dependable, you must dress dependably.

Once you have decided on the message you want to project think about people who project that image and analyze their style. This can be someone you know or a celebrity. On this blog we have drawn inspiration from Tom Ford to Mad Men, try mirroring the aspects of their look that work for you, but make sure to make the look your own.

You don’t want to become a clone! Your style should be unique and express who you want to be rather than who you are. You don’t want to dress like an unemployed person if you are out looking for a job. Developing your own style may take a little time and practice, but with a little effort you can transform your image and maybe even your life because you may well become what you and others believe that you are.

And once you have developed your look to what you want it to be, make sure you maintain it like we said in this post - the mark of a real style icon and truly stylish gent is the ability to keep consistent with your dress and not let your high standards drop – not in public at least.
