Csquared Guide: How To Wear a Scarf

The scarf is one of the most practical and versatile winter accessories. Today, Csquared Menswear offers many stylish ways for a man to wear a scarf.

The Parisian Knot

The Parisian knot provides a great amount of warmth without sacrificing style.  The resulting look is very European and sophisticated.  This knot is paired best with a trim, short jacket.

How to tie it:
1)    Fold the scarf lengthwise.
2)    Drape the folded scarf around your neck
3)    Take the loose ends in one hand, the loop in the other.
4)    Pull the loose ends through the loop to achieve desired knot.
5)    Tighten as desired.

Once-around Knot

The once-around knot is among the more casual ways to wear a scarf.  More importantly, it is easy to tie and warm.  The knot looks good with a blazer and is simple enough to be tied on the go.

How to tie it:
1)    Drape the scarf around your neck with one side hanging lower than the other.
2)    Cross the longer end under the shorter end.
3)    Bring the longer end under the crossing point and through the gap with your neck.
4)    Tighten as desired.

Muffler

The muffler is a classic and practical knot.  The accumulation of fabric right under the chin provides the wearer with greater protection on particularly blustery days.  This knot can be worn rather tight on colder days and looser, for a more fashionable urban take on warmer winter days.

How to tie it:

1)    Drape the scarf around your neck with one side hanging lower than the other.
2)    Take the longer end and wrap it around your neck.
3)    Adjust the wrap to be looser or tighter, depending on your circumstances.

Twice Around Knot

This knot is incredibly warm, though not exactly neat.  There is little more to this knot than simply wrapping a scarf around one’s neck until the scarf is entirely bundled around the neck.  Tuck the ends of the scarf into a jacket for even more warmth. This knot is quite cumbersome.

How to tie it:

1)    Drape a scarf around your neck with one end at your collarbone, the other at your waist.
2)    Wrap the long end around your neck twice.
3)    Adjust as desired.

The Over-the-Shoulder Throw

Throwing a scarf over one’s shoulder can work out quite well or rather poorly.  On one hand, when worn properly, this look can be suave, warm and carefree.  However, there is always the risk of looking like a misplaced extra from the latest Harry Potter Movie.  Avoid bold prints or bright colors with this method to stay away from the Hogwarts look.

How to do it:

1)    Drape the scarf around your neck with one end slightly longer than the other.
2)    Wrap the longer end halfway around your neck, allowing it to rest on your back.

The New Gatsby Will Be the Most Stylish Movie Ever

The trailer opens up with a group of perfectly-costumed revelers partying it up and drinking champagne while their car speeds down a bridge into Mahattan to one of our favorite tunes -Kanye West and Jay-Z’s ‘No Church in the Wild’, which sets the tone for the trailer’s lavish party scenes and even better wardrobe.

The Great Gatsby 2012

This trailer is a visual feast that assures us we’re in for a breathtaking blend of 20s decadence with a modern twist. DiCaprio looks incredibly dapper, and seems to be perpetually clad in a cream colored suit. The rest of the cast is just as well-dressed.

The Great Gatsby 2012

Best bit of the trailer is when there are some tailored shirts flying like birds off a balcony, and Carey Mulligan, as Daisy Buchanan, says “You always look so cool. The man in the cool beautiful shirts,” — to which we can only nod — and then you see Tobey Maguire’s retro, shiny, inimitable hair, and suspenders, and killer satin bow ties, tied perfectly.

The Great Gatsby 2012

Are you as excited as us for Christmas, when this film will be released?

Csquared Style Inspiration: What is Timeless Style?
Numero Homme 14
Image: Numero Homme 14

What is timeless style?

Timeless style is easy to define yet hard to explain; simply it’s a sense of style or a way of dressing that will never go out of date or become unfashionable. Like many things in menswear it is elusive and seemingly unattainable – we men don’t have the same amount of choice in clothes as women do. Timeless style is  wearing certain clothes which embody the whole persona.

So how does a piece of clothing become timeless?

For an item of clothing to become timeless, we at Csquared think it must have some kind of impact on popular culture – whether that be someone cool wearing it in a movie, an artist painting it or a singer writing a song about it. If someone who has a lot of public support wears a particular piece whilst doing something iconic then the item is well on its way to being cemented into the wardrobes of the world’s most stylish men.

The Men Who Embody Timeless Style

Over the last 60-ish years, many different men have embodied this sense of timeless style. To name a few: Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando,  Cary Grant, Sammy Davis Jr and the modern stylish man right now, hands down is Tom Ford.

Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Marlon brando

A timeless style requires more than just considering the clothes you wear. All these men seem to share a number of personal characteristics; the first – and KEY – being confidence. Most of them have to be confident because their jobs push them into the public eye, but if you watch them, notice their actions, how they speak, their mannerisms, you will notice they have a sense of true inner confidence that just oozes out of them. With this confidence comes an innate sense of style and fashion – of what always looks good on them and in what situation. These men are all undeniably “cool” . Cool seems to go hand in hand with timeless style; cool people make an item timeless and timeless items make people “look” even cooler.

Cary Grant, Sammy Davis Jr, Tom Ford

What stands out about all these men is that you could take each and every one of these out of the generation they lived in and put them in another and they would still look just as great today if they dressed exactly the same way. They had an innate sense of style which transcended generations and every cyclical trend we have seen in between.

Now that we’ve spoken about what times style is and the men that embody it lets talk about some pieces that ARE timeless. Pieces everyone should own and  know will look fantastic on them.

The Suit

Tom Ford S/S2012 Menswear Collection

Image: Tom Ford S/S2012 Menswear Collection

Quintessentially male, the suit is every males formal uniform of choice. Always smart, the suit can be worn as easily to work as it can to a cocktail party. The suit comes in different styles and colours: single breasted, double breasted, three piece, one button, two button, peak lapels, shawl collar, black, white, grey, navy or even brighter colours in summer. Pick your poison as the list is a long one.

Csquared Winter Collection 2012

If you want something that is truly timeless, then stick to a two button mid to dark grey suit – it will work at any situation you throw at it.

The Blazer

Vogue Hommes: Gas Masked Suitings

Image: Vogue Hommes - Gas Masked Suitings

The blazer is a versatile piece that can be worn for just about any occasion. Whats great about a blazer is that it has the unique ability to both dress up and dress down different outfits. Wear it with a v-neck t-shirt and a pair of jeans and you instantly look smarter, pair it with some trousers and you suddenly look more causal than the people in full suits.

Csquared Menswear Winter Collection 2012

For the winter months, Csquared recommends a grey blazer and for summer a navy blue blazer, although a black blazer can be worn at any time and is great for party season.

The Trench Coat

From the black and white films of the 40s to the present day, the trench coat remains a must have piece of clothing. You can stick to the classic khaki colour or a black/navy version if you want something a bit sharper. Wear it over a suit, or a simple pair of jeans and polo shirt combination for a more dressed down look.

Csquared Menswear Winter Collection 2012

Wear it closed and tied to make a formal statement or open with the belt tied around the back for a more casual look.

What are your favourite timeless pieces and style icons?

Csquared Menswear Cannes Film Festival Style Report

Every May Hollywood’s A-List heads to the south of France for The Cannes Film Festival to enjoy a couple weeks of movies and lavish parties and like most we’d much rather be there in person, but instead will admire the fashion finery from afar.

The Good

Ben Stiller, Gerrard Butler, Chris Pine at Cannes 2012

Picking our favorites from the red carpet was not easy. So many of the gents got it so right but three gents above for us were standout. While the black suit may be a staple at such events, you have to appreciate those that make the effort to look refined and polished. The fits above are all flawless and each of these men should thank their tailor on a job well done.

Alec Baldwin, Diddy & Ewan McGregor at Cannes 2012

Alec Baldwin and Ewan Mcgregor opted not to go with all black and it definitely paid off. Alec looked dashing in his navy blue tuxedo, complete with bow-tie. Ewan Mcgregor went for a more Cannes-chic look for his photocall. He wore a navy blue light jacket and pant, a white striped shirt and a dark grey silk star-printed tie from the Marni Spring 2012 collection. Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs also cleaned up quite nice, the rapper brought along a 50 person entourage with him to Cannes so we’re going to assume his stylist was along for the trip.

Young Hollywood

Douglas Booth, Ed Westwick & Shia LaBouef

Young Hollywood brought their A-game to Cannes. Ed Westwick looks great in his tailored tux and Douglas Booth has a more casual styled look at the Romeo & Juliet event. We like Shia’s mix of grey and blue but the jacket could be fitted a little better.

The Patterns

Cameron Silver, Bill Murray, Tong Dawei at Cannes 2012

We appreciate those that like to think of the box and go against fashion norms. While it worked for some - Tong Dawei we are looking at you and your checked shirt matched with burgandy tie, it didn’t for others - Bill Murray breaking several fashion rules all in one go. We would have liked to see Bill Murray pick one statement piece from his outfit rather than all three at once as Cameron Silver did with the black and white print pants which he matched with a black jacket and bowtie.

The Bad

Chris O'Dowd, Ezra Miller & Pete Doherty at Cannes 2012

Sometimes bad fashion happens to good people. Chris O’Dowd was obviously going for a casual look but for us he got it very wrong. A different shirt would have worked so much better, perhaps one that compliments his shoes. We actually like Ezra Miller’s look but the badly worn cumberband ruined what could have been a stylin’ look. As for Pete Doherty where to begin…the musician looks like he just rolled out of bed. Looking good is not only about the clothes you wear but also about grooming.

Double breasted

This final look comes from Lapo Elkann who is the heir to the Fiat Empire. We have to give the man props for his bold style choices. The double breasted suit and loafers are clearly working for him. We especially like the white suit which looks very stylish and modern.

Lapo Elkann at Cannes 2012

Which were the best looks for you? Did we miss anyone?

Csquared Exclusive: #TOPSWAG Style Icon Mvelo Makes His Yellow Carpet Debut

It has only been a few weeks since we crowned Mvelo Ncube the Csquared #TOPSWAG Style Icon Winner 2012 and it was at the glamorous  MTN SAMAs he made he red/yellow carpet debut. Dressed head to toe in Csquared, our stylish winner walked the yellow carpet with the celebs and enjoyed VIP access to the main event and after party.

We asked Mvelo to tell us in his own words about his much anticipated debut:

Attending my first event on behalf of Csquared was a fun experience. More so when its the SAMA’s and they’re held at Sun City.

Anyone familiar with the resort knows that fun and great memories are just guaranteed alongside the monkeys you’ll find on your patio now and again.

The SAMA’s were amazing with everyone dressed to the 9’s, 10’s, 11’s and 12’s. My best dressed for the night were Pearl Thusi, Minnie Dlamini,  Zizo Beda and Khuli Roberts putting the quirky into fashion with a dress made out of cellphone memory cards.

I spotted music sensation Theo Kgosinkwe, looking good in his Csquared suit. It was like tinsel had made a 24 hour stop at the Super Bowl, the fashion was just that great.

The morning after the night before all that could cure the headache which served as a reminder from a great night of literally dancing with the stars was the famous ‘Sun City breakfast’ and litres of coffee and a few more hours by the poolside with friends and well a long island or three.

With luggage packed, memories collected and check out keys in hand, all roads lead back home to JHB having experienced my first SAMA’s dressed by Csquared, it couldn’t have been any better.

Fashion’s Most Stylish Give Mark Zuckerberg an (Almost!) Hoodie-Free Makeover

Mark Zuckerberg is having a good year. The 28 year old billionaire bought Instagram US$ 1 billion and today Facebook is going IPO,meaning that the company will finally be open to stock holders where the likes of Wall Street and even you can purchase a part of the social media company. But with the estimated US$100 billion that is supposedly coming his way, you have got to wonder whether Mark has plans to invest in a new wardrobe.

Mark Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg is rarely seen out of his daily ‘uniform’ that consists of dowdy college sweaters, sweat-drenched Adidas shower flip flops, and tattered baggy jeans. One blog asked what we have all been thinking ” Can all the money in the world transform someone from HTML geek to sartorial chic?” Fashionista then went one step further and rounded up several fashion experts that include designers, buyers and industry leaders to see what kind of style advice they would give Silicon Valley’s hottest star.

Suit Up Zuckerberg

Wouldn’t it be nice to see Zuckerberg in a suit on his big day? As a man with billions at his command, it’s only right he look the part too…

What they say: Kurt Soller from Esquire chose a blue fitted slim suit tailored to show Zuckerberg as full on corporate. John Jannuzzi chose a look from Billy Reid’s Menswear Collection as he feels it “…would be a good match for him, it’s approachable but doesn’t read too old or ‘captain of industry’.” Ashley Math went for a well-fitting sport coat, a washed button down shirt paired with a cool, skinny knit tie. “Basically, something that says ‘pulled-together’ and totally relaxed all at once.”

What we say: As Mark is new to the whole formal wear game, we feel he should probably start by slowly incorporating the basic elements. He doesn’t have to go full formal wear on the first try but he could definitely do with with a fitted blazer, custom made shirt and a skinny tie.  He would still be formal and the skinny tie would be a nice nod to geek chic. If Mark is feeling a little adventurous, he could wear a tie with stripes or a jacket with small details like a contrasting fabric lining on the lapel and pockets of his blazer.

Csquared Menswear Winter Collection 2012-13

Csquared Winter Collection 2012-13- Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

Casual Zuckerberg

We think casual Zuckerberg is something that could probably happen and would be fairly easy for our billionaire to adapt.

What they say: Csquared could not agree more with Banana Republic creative director Simon Kneen when he says “No wardrobe is complete without an item blazer. Throwing a blazer on is the easiest way to add polish to any look. A modern cut is also slimming and nods to the tailoring trend without a complicated approach – effortless panache at its best.” Lawrence Schlossman, associate editor at Complex thinks Mark “…could easily adopt a casual, soft tailored look and feel just as comfortable, while finally looking like the wildly influential and important guy we all know him to be.” Bumsuk Choi, designer at General Idea goes for an even more relaxed look for Mark by styling him in a simple pair of fitted chinos and a colorful short sleeve shirt to accent the chinos.

What we say: One of things we noticed about Mark’s day to day look is he likes to wear grey t-shirts. He could up his casual look by opting for a checked shirt. It would be a chic and comfortable alternative to Mark’s standard gray t-shirt. and they’ll add color and style to his wardrobe.

csquared winter collection 2012-13

Csquared Winter Collection 2012-13- Avail at Markham & Stuttafords

Winter Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg’s trademark is a hoodie. Comfortable and warm enough for the California winters but its important to invest in a good winter coat.

What they say: Designer Richard Chai doesn’t want to completely change Zuckerberg’s casual look rather he’d “…like to edge him up a bit by adding a play on plaids and patterns layered up. Make him more of a rockstar that he is for being the founder of Facebook.” Ken Downing, fashion director at Neiman Marcus, doesn’t want to rid Mark of his signature hoodie look, “Stick with it and take it to the next level. I love the look of a hoodie under a jacket.”

What we say: Definitely adding some colour to Mark’s largely grey and blue wardrobe, we think he should invest in at least one black winter coat he can wear on formal occasions. By adding accessories like scarves, he can add some much needed colour into his wardrobe.

Csquared Guide: Simple Ways of Adding Elegance to Your Day to Day Look

We at Csquared have noticed that more and more men are starting to pay attention to their appearance, carefully selecting what they plan on wearing each day and while this is great, we are still seeing simple mistakes being made. Neglecting some basics can leave your style looking sloppy, by paying attention to the simplest details, you can add a touch of elegance to your everyday look.

Image via Sisa

When talking about adding elegance, we are not asking you to dress in a tailored suit everyday, rather pay attention to the finest details that can enhance any causal or formal look.

So what are the simplest ways to add elegance? British Fashion Designer Paul Smith has a few ideas:

Accessories

Accessories subtly reinforce the theme/look you are going for and show individuality or personality. Men however tend to fall short when it comes to accessorizing - only wearing the bare necessities such as a belt, socks and carrying a decent wallet they forget thateverything you wear should compliment you and should add to the overall style of your look.

Image via The Dandy Project

Accessories give us the freedom to add detailing to our looks and add a simple touch of elegance. If you’ve got a pocket, add a pocket square.

Wearing socks, don’t be afraid to show them off by slightly turning up your trousers.

(L) Image via Esquire Magazine (R)CSQUARED Winter 2012-13 Collection - avail at Markham and Stuttafords

So much effort can be put into what you’re wearing, but it can easily be ruined by something as simple as stuffing your pockets with your wallet, phone etc. Get yourself a decent holdall or satchel which is functional, stylish and will give your outfit those clean and elegant lines we are aiming for.

Fit

Fit is something which is extremely important. However, with the increasing responsibilities and commitments the modern man faces, most of us have no time to try things on – it makes it very easy to buy something that isn’t the PERFECT fit.

Steve Gold by Jason Capobianco | GQ Japan No.70 March 2009

You can dramatically enhance your style by paying a little more attention on ensuring what you are wearing fits right. You would be surprised that by going up or down a size can produce a completely different look – produce a looser fitting shirt, giving a more relaxed and casual feel or a smaller size could produce more of a slim fit, giving more off a tailored, elegant feel. It’s that extremely thin line that can define your style, and it really is important to spend that extra bit of time considering the finer details whenever you dress.

CSQUARED Winter 2012-13 Collection - avail at Markham and Stuttafords

Fabric

Fabric is another area we should pay attention to as combining a variety of textures into one look can be extremely effective.

Image via GQ Japan

Something as simple as layering a cable knit jumper into your outfit can add another texture and depth to a look, whilst opting for a tweed or corduroy blazer rather than a typical cotton version can a whole new element to an existing outfit. Combining fabric and textures can surprisingly add a lot more to the overall style of a look than you first think.

CSQUARED Winter 2012-13 Collection - avail at Markham and Stuttafords

Always take notice of what you are wearing every day but don’t let things slack by not paying attention to the additional considerations of a well dressed male.
